President’s Message

Winter definitely seems to be upon us. The last of my flowers (asters) were still blooming last weeks and still looks beautiful in their frozen state. I have left most of my plants standing with their seedheads intact so birds will have some extra food this winter. It looks kind of messy but I tell myself I’ll have more energy to clean come the spring anyway…

It is with a bit of sadness that I write this post as it will likely be my last. It’s that time of year where we have our elections for board members. I have been privileged, for the past two year, to be the hort. soc. president. I have learned so much and have made many new friends. I’ve enjoyed being part of an amazing board of directors. Everyone was incredibly committed to making our society exciting and interesting!

Our AGM will be on Wednesday the 28th at 6 pm. Please note the time.

We still need a couple of members willing to sit on the board and someone to take the role of president.

So if you’re interested and need more information, please contact me.

We will share a pot luck dinner before the “official meeting”. This meeting will be very short so we can spend more time enjoying each other’s company.

We will supply turkey and stuffing. We ask that you bring, if possible, a side/veggie dish, a salad or a dessert. We will also supply tea, coffee or juice.

Please bring your plate, glass and cutlery.

I look very much forward to seeing all of you at the meeting next Wednesday.

President’s Message

First, let me thank all of you who sent me kind words on the passing of my brother. I really appreciated it.

Summer has now come and gone. It almost always seems to catch us of guard. The ice on my bird feeders this morning certainly confirmed that winter is on the way. It’s time to make one last pass in the garden.

At this month’s meeting we are pleased to have Kevin Halloran and Sharon Toth guide us as to when and how to prune our trees and shrubs.

Membership fees are due this month. It’s still just $15.00 for a single and $25.00 for a family membership. We will be issuing membership cards that will be valid from Oct. 2018 to Oct. 2019.

As our meeting falls on Halloween night please feel free to wear some kind of costume. We will have special treats for everyone.

Next month on November 28th will be our AGM. At this meeting we will have a pot luck dinner (the society provides turkeys and cranberry sauce) and the election of our board of directors.

The members of the Nomination Committee are Lise Bois (lisefbois@gmail.com), Sally Clark (sallyisinoakville@gmail.com) and John Clark (johnclarkinthecounty@gmail.com).

Board members willing to do another term are :

R. John Garside Secretary
— withdrawn — Treasurer
John Clark Promotion
Sally Clark Membership
Kathy Kingsley-Bondy Mini Shows
Hedy Brambat-Kellar Vendor Coordinator for garden show
Darlene Johnston Refreshments and 50/50 draw
Nancy Kish Garden Tour Coordinator

As my two year term is up, I will be stepping down as president. I will continue to sit on the board as past president.

Ideally, we would like another board member and someone willing to be president.

If you or someone you know is interested in being on the board, please email me, Sally or John Clark.

I hope to see you at the meeting this month.

Lise

Society Meeting for September 26

On a cool and breezy evening close to 30 people attended our first Garden Society Meeting for the fall season. The members were welcomed by our current secretary R. John Garside who encouraged everyone to participate in the future Mini-Shows and to forward any change in their email addresses to our Membership person, Sally Clark. John introduced out guest Speaker – Tamara Segal of hawthornherbals.

Presentation – Common Herbs

Tamara then proceeded to enlighten the crowd about all the various common herbs that can be found in your garden and easily harvested to make teas, and many had other creative uses.

The audience was most captivated by Tamara’s presentation and there were many questions asked and answered. Tamara pointed out that it is very important to know what is in your garden and when to harvest as not all herbs survive the cold weather and many plants reach their peak of goodness at different times of the year.

Tamara also brought along a number of samples from her garden and passed them around. The audience was most appreciative of her presentation and several members remained at the end of the meeting to gather more information that Tamara had brought with her.

Tamara was well applauded at the end of her presentation and the members were then advised about our October meeting and to remember to participate in the Mini-show.
