Hints for success in sowing seeds

Scarification- Some seeds with hard waterproof coats, such as those of morning glory and nasturtium need a little roughing up to encourage germination. Rubbing with sandpaper or nicking with a knife should do the trick.

Presoaking – Some seeds, especially large ones with hard coats benefit from an overnight soak in warm water. Plant immediately following the soak. Sweet peas, corn, parsley, carrots and morning glories respond well.

Sprinkling seeds – Small seeds , cleome and poppy, are easier to distribute evenly if mixed with sand and shaken over the garden.
